Engines previously based at the SNBR or on loan to the SNBR.

Over the years the SNBR has taken several engines on loan and so it is only fair to give them some credit.

Great Northern (1987):

Great Northern was the first steam engine based at the SNBR, and resided for approximately a year before break down and a row with then SNBR management meant the owner took his engine away. Great Northern was quite at home pulling 2 coaches around the SNBR. Great Northern has since changed hands a few times since the late 1980's and is believed to now reside in Surrey.

Perient Taid (1990 - 1997)

Perient Taid was built by Ex Cahirman David Meredith, who has now sadly passed away. Perient taid was a varient of the Romulus class finished in green but with panier tanks over the boiler rather than the more common side tanks. A free steaming and hard working engine, she was regularly out on Sundays clocking up the miles.

GG1 (2000 and 2011)

GG1 - this 20 wheel monster came on loan to the SNBR straight from Mardykes sheds for the 2000 Kestrel gala. The engine was slightly renovated and the springing system altered to be softer and she ran at the SNBR for almost 6 months. She was capable of pulling 5 carriages and had a unique drive system to its power bogies.

Pinza

This again came on loan for the Kestrel gala of 2000. The engine is a Mardyke and can be seen in the picture towing our Hymek back to the shed. Like the GG1 she was a petrol. She only has one power bogie and could only cope with a 3 coach train (1 coach more than when she first arrived!!!). Pinza resides at the Great cockrow railway and is owned by the very well known Ian Allan. She never runs passenger trains at the GCR and was in dire need of a refit when she arrived. Not only was she repainted but the weight distribution was altered and the whole engine overhauled in just 2 weeks.

Bluebell (2002-2003)

Bluebell is a Tinkerbell build by Jeff Stubbs and owned by Bolbroke Castle in Sussex. The engine although powerful was not able to stop a full train and was thus only used on passengers when double heading. The engine has been re-named and had a cab fitted. In 2009 she was up for sale at bolebroke castle.

Tinkerbell. (christmas only 2006, 2007, 2008)

The "original" Tinkerbell was loaned to the SNBR to help out the 2006 Santa Specials, and again in 2007 and 2008. The engine was built in 1968 and is regarded as the first "proper" sit in Narrow gauge engine. For more information on Tinkerbell and the varient engines it has sporned please visit the Moors Valley Railway (links page will send you to them!).

Medea. (Christmas 2009 and the 2014 gala)

Medea was started with other Maldon Club members as a group enterprise in 1978. The name was chosen to compliment Talos. These names come from Greek mythology. This loco started life as an 0-6-2T. The orignal marine boiler was changed for a conventional one in 1985. She is now a 2-6-2T and was further improved 2001 when she was finally rebuilt with a larger capacity boiler and larger cylinders. She is easily able to pull a full 12 carriage train around her home railway of Moors Valley Railway. She was loaned to SNBR for the 2009 Santa Season and 1st Janaury 2010 charity day, and returned for another jaunt around our track for 2014 gala where once again she performed brilliantly.

"Destiny" - 2009-2010

Destiny was purchased by two members of the SNBR for completion. After 12 months progress was slow and they decided to sell the engine to raise funds for a different project. The petrol engine and pump have been retained for use in building a different engine at a later date.

"Horton" - 2010-2011

Horton (nearest engine to camera) was loaned from the MVR for the winter of 2010 and for use on charity day 2011. This amazing little engine was originally designed to be a class offered for sale by MVR, and since her creation two engines Jack and Jupiter have been constructed for other railways. Horton was originally going to be loaned to the SNBR for the 21st anniversary but due to maintenance being required, Tinkerbell was supplied at that time. Horton steamed really well at the SNBR and was much loved.

"Jason" - 2011

Jason was also loaned from the MVR, this time for the SNBR 25th. This wonderful machine is the inspriation for Suisaidh and Prince Sheian. Over the 4 weeks she was present at the SNBR, she performed without fault. We even managed to get the double header in with Suisaidh.
